Introduction to Understanding Sexual Assault

This interactive training is a high-level overview of sexual violence. The training explores the complexities of sexual violence and its impact on victims; the nuances of working with different populations of sexual assault victims, including child, male, and LGTBQ+ victims; the various responses victims may have after experiencing sexual violence and how to cultivate trauma-informed practices when interacting with victims, especially for law enforcement and prosecution; evidentiary challenges, particularly regarding sexual assault kits, to reporting; legal challenges, including statute of limitations, and opportunities, like those available through the civil justice system; and how to provide a coordinated community response to sexual assault victims. This course is intended to introduce the topic of sexual assault by applying learned concepts to real-world situations using practical scenarios and a learning assessment.
